Dinanath’s first wife was Narmada Devi who was the elder sister of Shevanti Devi. After the death of Narmada Devi, Dinanath ji married Shevanti Devi, the mother of Lata. Lata ji was the eldest child among 4 sisters and 1 brother. He has 3 sisters named Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar  and one brother of Lata ji whose name is Hriday Nath Mangeshkar .

Lata ji’s father Dinanath ji died in the year 1942 when Lata ji was only 13 years old. Lata ji was the eldest child out of 5 siblings. After the death of her father, all the responsibilities of the family fell on Lata ji’s shoulders. Vinayak Damodar Karnataki, who was a good friend of Latha ji’s father, helped Deenanath ji’s family in such a situation, with their help Latha ji’s musical journey started. Her first song was sung by Lata ji for a Marathi film ‘ Kirti Hasal ‘ in the year 1942.
