The Programme

The training course on “Numerical Simulation Of Groundwater Flow And Mass Transport For Effective Management Of Aquifers”, which is sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India under the program of DST schools on mathematical modeling in Earth Sciences is scheduled for three weeks at CESS, Trivandrum during the period of 01-20 August’ 2005.

Target Groups

This training program is meant for groundwater professionals working in Central and State Government departments, University teachers and research scholars, who are interested in groundwater studies.

Over forty candidates have registered for the course, hailing from CGWB, Chennai and Trivandrum Ground Water Departments of different southern states, IIT-Chennai and from various universities and colleges in the state as well as outside. The training is designed with fifty percent theory classes and the rest with practicals.

Modules

The Course consists of following modules:
* Theory classes on recapping groundwater flow and mass transport equation.
* Illustration of various existing case studies.
* Introduction of software (Visual Modflow and PMWIN)
* Practical training on the analysis of the data for a particular basin (individual study).
* Evolving conceptual model of the system.
* Design of Grid and model construction (flow and mass transport).
* Training on trial and error method and inverse model calibration.
* Sensitivity analysis and model prediction.
* Report writing on Model study.
* Presentation of the report.
