The Western Ghats

A major orographic feature of the Indian Peninsula fringing the west coast from Tapti estuary to Capecomerin

The western declivity is steep and usually terraced

40% of the area of Kerala lies within the Western Ghats

The plateau surfaces and the plains are separated by steep plateau margins with adjacent dissected zones

Most of the landslides are confined to these zones

Type of landslides

Rock falls- generally confined to steep slopes
Rock slips- occur were artificial cuts are made in rock slopes
Debris flows or Orul Pottal- the most prevalent and recurring type
